As a supplier of articles, you are responsible for that the articles you sell are safe for humans and the environment. Therefore, it is important that you have knowledge of the hazardous substances in your articles and how the risks can be managed. The PRIO tool helps you to find the dangerous substances in your articles that should be avoided or replaced.
All articles, such as furniture, toys, and electronics, contain chemical substances. As a supplier of articles, you are responsible for that the articles you sell are safe for humans and the environment. For certain substances that are listed on the Candidate List in the EU, you also have an obligation to provide information to your customers. Therefore, it is important that you have knowledge of which dangerous substances your articles contain. Some substances you should avoid altogether or replace if they already are present your articles.
As a supplier of articles, you are often also a purchaser (in Swedish only).

How can PRIO help me?
The PRIO tool helps you to search for hazardous substances in your articles that you should avoid or replace. You also get help to prioritise which substances you should replace in the first place. If you choose to keep one step ahead of the legislation and avoid substances that are about to be restricted or banned, your articles will last longer over time. It can save your business both time and money. If the articles are non-toxic from the beginning, the possibility also increases that they can be recycled into new chemically safe products.
The database PRIO gives easy access to information about
- substances and groups of substances that have dangerous properties
- examples of hazardous substances and groups of substances that can be found in different types of materials
- which substance or substances you should prioritise to replace or avoid.
- if the substances are on the Candidate List in REACH.
How can I use PRIO?
If you do not know which hazardous substances there are in the articles you sell, you can search for the presence of PRIO substances in various materials in PRIO. All articles consist of different materials, such as plastic, ceramic, wood, or textile. The materials in turn contain chemical substances. When you search for a certain material in PRIO, you get examples of dangerous substances that the material may contain. You will also find out what dangerous properties the substances have, and you can do a further search to find out if they are regulated in the chemicals legislation or not.

If you know which substances are present in the articles you sell, you can search for the different substances directly in PRIO to get information about the dangerous properties of the substances. Based on the results, you can then decide which substances you want to replace or avoid in the articles.

If you do not know which hazardous substances there are in the articles you sell, you can search the presence of PRIO substances in materials in PRIO. All articles consist of different materials, such as plastic, ceramics, wood, or textiles. The materials in turn contain chemical substances. When searching for a specific material in PRIO, you get examples of dangerous substances that the material may contain. You also get to know the dangerous properties of the substances.

PRIO helps you prioritise which substances you should focus on when you want to avoid or replace hazardous substances. There are two priority levels in the tool. Substances belonging to the group phase-out substances should be avoided or replaced altogether. In the case of substances that belong to the group priority risk reduction substances you should reduce the risk to humans and the environment as much as possible. You can do this by reviewing how the substance is used and what the exposure looks like.

When you search for a substance in PRIO, you will find out if the substance is on the Candidate List in the EU chemicals legislation REACH. It is a list of substances where most are not banned in the chemicals regulations at present, but which may require a permit to be used or may be restricted in other ways within the EU in the future. You will also find out if the substance is a so-called phase-out substance in PRIO. Such a substance has such dangerous properties that it meets the criteria to be entered on the Candidate List and be subject to further regulations in the field of chemicals in the future. Other substances may also be subject to restrictions and prohibitions in the future, if they have a use that includes unacceptable risks to human health or the environment.

For substances on the so-called Candidate List in the EU, there is a duty to provide information. This means that you who sell an article that contains more than 0.1% by weight of a substance on the Candidate List must provide sufficient information so that the customer can handle the article in a safe way. When you search for a substance in PRIO, you will find out if the substance is on the Candidate List.

You can search in PRIO for individual substances and groups of substances. You can also search for and retrieve information on a wide variety of substances at the same time. It is also possible to search for different types of materials, such as plastic, ceramics or textiles and get examples of hazardous substances that may be present in the materials.
How can I use the information found in PRIO?
The search results from PRIO can be saved in an Excel file on your computer. This helps you to communicate in a concrete and clear way about which dangerous substances you should replace or avoid. Communication can take place both internally at your company and with your customers or suppliers.
