The Swedish Chemicals Agency has had extensive cooperation with Tanzania for many years, both regarding chemicals in general and pesticides in particular.

In 2025, a Memorandum of Understanding was established between us and TPHPA (Tanzania Plant Health and Pesticides Authority), focusing on support for the implementation of the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS), the development of the current pesticide registration procedure, and assistance in reducing risks associated with the use of Highly Hazardous Pesticides (HHPs). The work is financed by Sida through KEMI’s global programme.

In the beginning of 2026, TPHPA decided to phase out a total of 130 pesticides that meet the criteria for being classified as highly hazardous, supported by updated legislation in the area.

We and THPHA have initiated a dialogue about the organization of a regional workshop bringing together East African Community (EAC) Partner States, with the primary objective of sharing experiences and strengthening collaboration on the mitigation and phase-out of Highly Hazardous Pesticides (HHPs).

The proposed workshop would serve as a platform for knowledge exchange on practical approaches to HHP risk mitigation, informed decision-making, and institutional capacity building. It would also aim to support countries at different stages of HHP management to learn from one another and accelerate progress toward meeting national and regional expectations on phasing out HHPs.
