Kenya

We are supporting Kenya in strengthening its chemicals management, with a particular focus on consolidating the registration process for pesticides and implementing the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS).

Through partnerships with key institutions—including the Pest Control Products Board (PCPB), the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), and other stakeholders—we contribute technical expertise, capacity building, and policy support. Our engagement includes training, development of risk assessment methods, support for regulatory processes, and guidance on enforcement and risk communication.

We also collaborate with international and local actors such as UNITAR, industry representatives, and civil society organizations to promote coordinated implementation and knowledge sharing. Workshops and stakeholder dialogues have helped build strong networks and increased awareness of GHS across government and industry.

A central part of our work is our close cooperation with PCPB, where we have developed a joint activity plan covering areas such as pesticide registration, environmental and health risk assessment and inspector training. We also provide both on-site and remote support, contributing to guidance documents and review processes.

Overall, our work in Kenya aims to build sustainable systems for chemicals management, enhance regulatory capacity, and support the safe use of chemicals to protect human health and the environment.
