Statistics in brief - Distribution of chemicals in different chemical groups

The chart shows the main chemical groups for the chemicals used in Sweden.

Petroleum substances are by far the largest group of chemical substances with a quantity of 54 million tonnes. The group consists both of the crude oil and the substances extracted from it like petrol, diesel and fuel oils.

Inorganic substances like cement, industrial gases and different salts are the second largest group.

Raw materials for manufacture of e.g. polymers, surface active agents and other chemicals with special functions constitute the organic substances group. Furthermore, several large organic substances are used as fuel, e.g. ethanol, MTBE and tall oil pitch.

Polymers are special organic substances that are used as the basis in plastic materials.

Water is contained as a solvent in about 30,000 chemical products, which is one third of all chemical products in the products register.
