Certain Swedish restrictions and bans
A number of unique Swedish rules restrict the occurrence of certain substances in chemical products and articles. These national restrictions and bans have no correspondence in other EU countries.
The Chemical Products (Handling, Import and Export Prohibitions) Ordinance (1998:944) contains particular provisions on bans and other restrictions when handling:
- two-part epoxy containing bisphenol A or bisphenol A diglycidyl ether
- cadmium in fertilisers
- microplastics in cosmetic products
- chlorinated solvents
- mercury and articles containing mercury
- ammunition containing lead
- certain other products and articles hazardous to health and the environment, such as drain cleaning products and car care products containing methanol
The Swedish Chemical Agency’s Regulations KIFS 2017:7 contain provisions on formaldehyde in wood-based boards. The Regulations also contain several exemptions from the bans in Ordinance 1998:944, for example on mercury and chlorinated solvents.
Dispensation from certain bans and restrictions
If there are exceptional reasons, the Swedish Chemicals Agency may grant an exemption from certain bans and other restrictions. An exemption can only be given in an individual case. The provisions for this are given in Ordinance 1998:944 and KIFS 2017:7.
