Bilateral cooperation with Zambia

The Swedish Chemicals Agency is since August 2020 cooperating with Zambia Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA) to strengthen the capacity of the authority and improve the management of pesticides. The programme is a part of the Swedish Chemical's Agency´s development cooperation and is supported by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida). The cooperation will run from 2020 to 2024 and the Swedish Chemicals Agency will have a long-term expert based in Lusaka, Zambia, from August 2020 to be able to support ZEMA on a daily basis.

The overall objective of the cooperation is to contribute to reduced risks from pesticides to human health and the environment and have the following focus areas:

  • Support for establishment of a registration process for pesticides where the products' effects to human health and the environment are assessed before the agency takes a registration decision
  • Support for improved management of highly hazardous pesticides at ZEMA
  • Support for establishment of an IT support system for registration of pesticides and further development of information on ZEMA’s website
