Piercing jewellery

Jewellery and other products may contain various metals. Nickel can give rise to a contact allergy, lead can damage the brain and nervous system, and cadmium can give rise to cancer and osteoporosis and damage the environment.

There are rules governing how much cadmium, lead or nickel may be present in a number of products. This applies to products such as piercing ornaments, earrings, necklaces, chains, anklets, rings, watch-cases, clasps, rivets, zips, keys and metal studs on clothing.

Sweden has put forward a proposal in the EU to ban lead in all products which children are able to put in their mouths.

Never allow children to suck on products made of metal.

The chemist offers a nickel test which can show if a product is giving off nickel.
