Leather and metal belt

Chromium and chromium compounds are used in applications such as treating surfaces, dyeing textiles, tanning leather, impregnating wood and producing colour pigment, ink and catalytic converters. Leather in handbags, gloves and belt may have been tanned with chromium to make the leather smoother. If the tanning has been done incorrectly, the products may contain traces of a toxic chromium compound. Chromium can also be found in toys, electronics and cement.

A number of chromium compounds can cause allergies and cancer. There are rules governing how much chromium may be present in cement, working gloves, toys and electronics.

Ask in the shop if the product contains chromium so that you can make a conscious choice.
