Each year several hundred children are harmed after coming into contact with lighter fluid, usually in connection with barbecuing. Just small amounts are sufficient for a child to develop breathing difficulties. What is known as chemical pneumonia may develop later on.
Lighter fluids shall be labelled with a danger symbol and a written warning. They shall also be packaged in black, transparent bottles containing a maximum of one litre. The aim is to minimise the risk of small children coming into contact with it.
Do this in order to protect children
- Always screw the cork back into the bottle.
- Do not rely on the childproof fasteners.
- Store the bottle in such a way that it is out of reach of children.
- Do not pour the lighter fluid into a bottle used for fizzy drinks or similar.
Call 112 and ask for Poison Information if the child has come into contact with a substance that might be dangerous.
