Insecticides for animals

Ensure that any insecticides you wish to purchase for use on your pet are approved. Unapproved agents may be harmful to animals.

Chemical pesticides for animals, such as sprays and liquids, must be approved by the Swedish Chemicals Agency in order to be sold and used.

Many of the pesticides that have not been approved are based on so-called “natural substances”. Essential, volatile oils are often found in insecticides for use on horses, as well as in products used to prevent ticks on cats and dogs. But natural does not necessarily mean harmless, and the oils can cause harm, such as hypersensitivity or allergic reactions. It is therefore a good idea to ensure that any insecticides you wish to purchase for use on your pet are approved by the Swedish Chemicals Agency.

Approved agents always have a four-digit registration number and are divided into three authorisation classes. In the the Pesticides Register (in Swedish only) External link., you can check the registration number and see if the product is approved, what class it belongs to and find other important information.

Protecting your horse from insects with a hood and blanket, for example, is preferable to using pesticides.
