The Swedish Chemicals Agency withdraws the authorisations of plant protection products with glyphosate and POE-tallowamine

The Swedish Chemicals Agency withdraws the authorisations of eleven plant protection products containing glyphosate and the co-formulant POE-tallowamine. The reason is that the European Commission has decided that plant protection products containing the active substance glyphosate shall not contain POE-tallowamine.

On August 22, the conditions for the approval of the active substance glyphosate in plant protection products within the EU were amended. One of the new conditions is that member states shall ensure that plant protection products containing glyphosate do not contain the co-formulant POE-tallowamine. As a consequence of this amendment the Swedish Chemicals Agency has withdrawn the authorisations of eleven plant protection products containing glyphosate and POE-tallowamine (please refer to the list below for the products concerned). The authorisations of the products are withdrawn from October 1 2016.

The Swedish Chemicals Agency has granted periods of grace, during which the products may be sold and used for a limited period of time after the authorisations of the products have been withdrawn. Nine of the products may be sold and distributed until March 31 2017. After that date, the products may be stored and used during additionally one year, until March 31 2018. The holder of the authorisations of the products Verdys and Glyphomax has abstained from a period of grace.

In Sweden there are still 23 authorised plant protection products containing glyphosate. The European Commission decided in June to prolong the approval of glyphosate. The prolongation of the approval expires 6 months from the date when the Commission receives the opinion of the Committee for Risk Assessment of the European Chemicals Agency or December 31 2017, whichever comes first.

Glyphosate is the most commonly used active substance in plant protection products in Sweden. Glyphosate is mainly used for weed control on agricultural land in spring before crop emergence, and in autumn after harvest.
