EU legislation

EU legislation is harmonised in EU member states. Compliance with the rules on chemicals is monitored by the Swedish Chemicals Agency (KemI).

Specific environmental concerns or worker protection aspects could provide scope for deviations from the requirements in European Community regulations and directives.

A large part of the work is concerned with providing background documentation for European Community decisions on chemicals.

KemI contributes extensive expert support and prepares draft Swedish opinions based on the Swedish environmental quality objective ´A Non-toxic environment´.

Experts employed at the Swedish Chemicals Agency take part in working groups and committees.
