Strategic approach to international chemicals control

Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management

SAICM is a process that aims to achieve, by 2020, that chemicals are produced and used in ways that lead to the minimization of significant adverse effects on human health and the environment.

The Swedish Chemicals Agency (KemI) is the national focal point for SAICM and co-ordinates the work of other bodies.

Meeting documents to the second session of the International Conference on Chemicals Management (ICCM2), Geneva, Switzerland, 11-15 May 2009 are available on the SAICM website.

In February 2006, the International Conference on Chemicals Management (ICCM1) adopted the completed SAICM, i.e. the Dubai declaration, comprising an overarching policy strategy and a global plan of action.

One important outcome was the agreement to make available relevant documentation on health and environmental assessments for all chemicals in international trade and to provide information on the contents of hazardous chemicals in articles.
