Six of seven examined cycle repair kits contained glue with impermissibly high concentrations of the harmful substance toluene. This was shown in a sample survey made by the Swedish Chemicals Agency (KemI). Concentrations ranged between 0.3 and 17 percent by weight. The maximal permitted concentration is less than 0.1 percent by weight. Toluene is for example classified as toxic to reproduction in category 3, which means risk of harm to the unborn child.
KemI has previously informed about complaints in other EU-countries concerning glue in cycle repair kits that contained impermissible concentrations of benzene and toluene. KemI´s examination showed no presence of benzene in any of the seven glue products. But the study reveals infringements and KemI will therefore be performing additional analyses of glue products in the spring.
The six products with excessive levels of toluene (see picture) has been stopped and withdrawn from shops by concerned companies.

The substance toluene is classified as toxic to reproduction in category 3, i.e. there is a potential risk of harm to the unborn child.
